List and briefly describe the 3 phases indicative of the schizophrenic cycle
What will be an ideal response?
Suggested response:
? Prodromal phase - refers to the period before the features of schizophrenia
become very apparent; this is the period of time during which the person's
level of functioning deteriorates;
? Active phase - where the disorder persists for at least six months with the
individual exhibiting psychotic features (for example, hallucinations,
delusions, and grossly disorganized behavior and speech) or negative
features such as flat affect for at least one month during that period;
? Residual phase – this phase follows the active phase, and is sometimes
considered a "filler" category because people have either been helped
successfully or they have improved to the point where they no longer have
enough features for the practitioner to ascertain the presence of
schizophrenia.
