What will be an ideal response?
At a minimum, answers should define protective factors as experiences that
decrease the likelihood of harmful outcomes. Protective factors are harder to study
because they are harder to identify and measure. They may include only the absence of
risk factors, may reduce the likelihood of harmful outcome, may decrease the impact of
risk factors, or may promote positive outcomes. They may modulate risk factors or exert
an independent influence on the negative outcomes, whether risk factors are present or
not.
