Answer: A slip plane in the brittle crust is a plane along which there is or has been frictional sliding so that the rock is permanently destroyed. A slip plane in a plastically deforming crystal is much smaller (it occurs within a grain at the atomic scale) and heals continuously without loosing strength. Intercrystalline plastic slip implies movement of a dislocation front within a plane in the crystal, and such a slip plane is usually the plane in a crystal that has the highest density of atoms.
