Group cohesiveness is a dynamic process reflected in the tendency for the group to stick together and be unified in the pursuit of its objectives and the satisfaction of member emotional needs. Groups that are cohesive tend to have higher rates of attendance, participation, and mutual support. It is important for group leaders to try to prevent heterogeneous groups from splitting into coalitions that are not committed to the interest of the whole group. Cohesive teams have been found to be more effective than teams with low levels of cohesion. However, there can be negative effects of group cohesion if it leads to pathological conformity that sacrifices individuality, a phenomenon known as groupthink.
