Stereotypes are widely held beliefs about people based on their membership in a specific group. Stereotyping is a normal cognitive process, and gender, age, ethnic, and occupational stereotypes are common. Stereotypes create biases in person perception that frequently lead to confirmation of people's expectations about others. Person perception is a subjective process. Stereotypes may lead people to see what they expect to see and to overestimate how often they see it (the illusory correlation).
