Depth perception capabilities develop over the first two years. Provide a timetable for the
development of this capability. Describe the visual cliff technique. What information does this
method provide?
What will be an ideal response?
3 months – limited capabilities; kinetic cues; flinching to objects approaching infant. 4 months –
binocular cues.
5 – 7 months – linear perspective and monocular cues.
Visual cliff – two sides of a table. One is a shallow side, pattern is display directly under the glass,
and does not indicate depth. Second side is deep sidewhere pattern is on floor and indicates depth. At
six months of age children, although called by parent, will not crawl on ‘cliff' side as they have by
then developed kinetic cues. Visual cliff supports interactionist view that experience is necessary for
timetable to be manifested.
