Discuss the types of megaliths and their significance.

There are several types of megaliths (“big stones”). One type is a menhir, named for the single, vertically positioned stone or post. Another type of megalithic structure is the dolmen, which consists of two posts roofed with a capstone or lintel). A third type is the cromlech, in which stones are circularly arranged, as at Stonehenge. These structures are found widely across Europe, particularly in England and France and were built without the use of mortar. Scholars disagree about their significance. Some scholars speculate that the stones may have marked ritual procession routes. Others think they symbolized the body and the process of growth and maturation, while still others believe they were built in tribute to the strength of those responsible for assembling them. There can be no doubt, however, that megaliths were designed to be permanent structures, whereas domestic architecture was not.
