Chromatography is analogous to a race between chemical compounds because, at the start, all of the participating substances are mixed together, but as the process progresses, the materials that prefer the moving phase slowly pull ahead of the substances that prefer to remain in the stationary phase. Finally, at the end of the "race," all the compounds have been separated, each having "crossed the finish line" at a different time.
