Samuel works outside. Last summer, he experienced a heat stroke. What occurred and how is this different from a fever?
What will be an ideal response?
Heat stroke, or hyperthermia, occurs when Samuel's normal compensations (such as sweating and dilating the blood vessels close to the skin) couldn't keep his core temperature within normal limits. If core temperature rises above 40°C/104°F, a person can become confrontational, faint, and confused. Sweating stops, compounding the problem of overheating. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and Samuel required immediate medical attention. In contrast, a fever represents a carefully monitored increase in the body's temperature set point and wouldn't necessarily require medical treatment.
