What is the rule of law? What is its purpose in Western democracies? What does it mean to say that "nobody is above the law"?

What will be an ideal response?

The rule of law is essentially the belief that an orderly society must be governed by established principles and codes that are applied uniformly and fairly to all of its members. The rule of law is central to Western democracies. It allows people to disagree with the law and ensures that due process has to be followed in any criminal prosecution. To say that nobody is above the law means that those who make or enforce the law must also abide by it.
