Outline the three steps in the strategy for rounding off decimals

What will be an ideal response?

The strategy for rounding off decimals is composed of the following three steps:
The students determine how many digits will appear after the decimal point when the numeral is rounded off; for example, when rounding off to the nearest tenth, one digit will be left after the decimal.
The students count that number of digits and then draw a line. If 3.4825 is to be rounded to the nearest tenth, the students place a line after the digit in the tenth place, which is the 4 in this example: 3.4 | 825. The line serves as a prompt.
The students look at the numeral after the line. If it is a 5 or more, they add another unit to the digit before the line. For example, .53|7 rounded to the nearest hundredth is .54 because 7 appears after the line. If a numeral less than 5 appears after the line, no extra unit is added. For example, .54 | 2 is rounded to .54 because a numeral less than 5 follows the line.
