In recent years, many planetary systems have been discovered around distant stars. This has been accomplished, not by direct observation of the planets themselves, but indirectly, by observing a wobbling motion in the star

Why is this wobbling motion evidence of a planet?

The center of mass of the star-planet system is stationary or moves with constant velocity. If a planet is orbiting the star, what is actually happening is that both the planet and the star are in orbit around the center of mass of the system. Seen from far away, this appears as a wobble in the position of the star.
