. Explain the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic religiousness as defined by Allport.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: According to Allport, what distinguishes healthy from unhealthy religiousness is motivation. Intrinsically religiosity exists when beliefs and practices are founded on personal and authentic motivations. This type of religiousness is associated with gratitude. In contrast, those whose religious practices are extrinsic use their religion as a path to egotistical ends; it is more of a social convention used as a source of comfort and therefore more self-serving. Researchers have critiqued this theory questioning whether the two are polar opposites and pointing out that cultural factors influence the both.
