Explain the concept of a naturalistic assessment. What does it provide that is different than traditional assessment models? Give an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Naturalistic assessment emphasizes functional goals and objectives for children in their natural environment. This type of assessment provides more information than simply a child's skill level in a particular area. Instead, it provides a greater understanding of the context and environmental expectations that are important for a child. Student examples will vary, but one example would be that if a child is expected to work quietly for somewhat long periods of time, professionals conducting the assessment know that they should focus on a child's ability to sit quietly for long periods of time.
