Provide an appropriate response. You are late for work. You have two options for getting to work. You may take the bus which takes on average 40 minutes with a standard deviation of 12 minutes. Or you can cycle which takes on average 50 minutes with a standard deviation of 2 minutes. Compare these two distributions. You leave your house at 8.20 am and are supposed to start work at 9.00 am. Which option would you choose if you will be fired if you are even a few minutes late? Which option would you choose if you know that up to 15 minutes late is OK but after that there is trouble? Explain your thinking.

What will be an ideal response?

Taking the bus is faster on average but there is more variation in the times. Cycling takes longer on average but there is less variation in the times.

Possibility one - you will be fired if you are even a few minutes late.
You should take the bus. If you cycle you will definitely be a little late. If you take the bus you could be on time or could be very late but you at least have a chance of being on time.
Possibility two: you will be OK if you are not more than 15 minutes late:
You should cycle. If you cycle you will almost certainly be there by 9.15 am. If you take the bus there is a chance you will be more than fifteen minutes late.
