• When tests are used for making decisions (e.g., whether to hire an individual, whether to recommend a person for clinical treatment), test developers and test users often identify a cut score--the score at which the decision changes.
• One approach used for employment tests as well as tests used for professional licensure or certification involves a panel of expert judges who provide an opinion or rating about the number of test items that a minimally qualified person is likely to answer correctly.
• The other general approach is more empirical and uses the correlation between the test and an outside criterion to predict the test score that a person who performs at a minimum level of acceptability is likely to make.
