Speculate why many technological innovations of the Chinese were never seen in the West, despite some trade
What will be an ideal response?
Chinese technology, such as the crossbow, the magnetic compass, gunpowder, and paper did not establish themselves in the West until many centuries after their invention. With all the trade along the Silk Road, it is curious that these innovations did not find their way to the Greco-Roman world. There could be many reasons, but both the Roman Empire and the Qin and Han dynasties were primarily concerned with ruling their own territories and peoples. Further, spices and fabric (especially silk) were most important to the Roman Empire; spices were essentials in the ancient world, serving not only to flavor food, but also as drugs, perfumes, preservatives, and anesthetics.
