On average, people eat more in social groups than when they eat alone. We eat more if the food sounds good (Chilean sea bass) than if it sounds odd (Patagonian toothfish). Thinking a new wine came from California makes it taste better than if it came from a state not famous for its wine. Seeing a large portion on the plate increases the amount one will eat. On the other hand, cultural pressures cause many people to want to lose weight.
