Major premises of RCT included:
RCT is a progressive theory that promotes connection and relationship over autonomy and independence with respect to how human beings grow and develop.
RCT provides group members opportunities for growth occur in relationship with others.
RCT details the process of connection, disconnection, and reconnection, and purports that authenticity and mutual empathy support growth in relationships.
RCT acknowledges that all relationships undergo times of disconnection, but identifies the healing power of reconnection, and its role in relational resiliency.
RCT cautions that when people are not able to navigate the reconnection process, and hide important aspects of themselves from others in order to attempt to stay in connection, they can experience what RCT refers to as condemned isolation.
