Our book asserts that if only the quality of lectures mattered in terms of effective instruction, we could probably find the best lecturers in the world, record their lessons, and show the videos to students. Why would video lessons alone not work very
well?
What will be an ideal response?
There are many reasons why a videotaped lecture may fail to reach all students. First, the video teacher has no idea what students already know and the material may be too advanced or too easy for a particular group of students. The video teacher has no way to check for understanding or answer questions. The video teacher also has no way to motivate to encourage students to pay attention to the lesson or apply themselves to exercises. If students misbehave the video teacher has no ability to redirect or correct behavior and the video teacher cannot monitor time on task. Also the video teacher has no way to know if students actually learned the material presented.
