Briefly explain how social network theory supports the need to create platform relevant messages.
What will be an ideal response?
Social network theory examines interrelationships among people and organizations. For PR professionals, the success of social media activities hinge on building interactive relationships, making it important to understand the influence of social network theory on social media and user behavior.
Three of the top social media platforms each illustrate a different concept of social network theory. For example, Facebook illustrates the network concept of size and quality, whereas LinkedIn illustrates the concept of social distance--people are more likely to do favors for people they have a close connection with. On the other hand, with its 140-character limit, Twitter demonstrates the concepts of network diffusion and how quickly a message spreads, and complexity, the more simple the message, the faster it spreads.
Understanding these differences as related to the social relationship for each platform helps guide content creation so messages are platform relevant and more meaningful to the target audiences.
