What are the unique difficulties facing women desiring to be single mothers described by

Mannis?

What will be an ideal response?

The women in Mannis's research were college educated professional women, probably
commanding considerable resources to meet the demands and needs for providing for the
single mother family, and as such, may not be very typical of lower income/status groups.
The women in this study held strong maternal desires, and took several years to come to the
decision and prepare for single motherhood. Most found that adoption was not an easy
process for single women, was expensive, took a long time, and limited decisions. Donor
insemination had its own difficulties, in selecting and arranging for the insemination,
screening sources, and managing the legalities of the transaction. Casual insemination by
choice was sometimes selected, but was also an event to be arranged and managed.
Women also expressed concern about providing a father role model for their children, and
maintaining contact and acceptance with family members. Most reported that they are able
to establish adequate support groups for their new family, and general acceptance of the
alternative lifestyle.
