Analyzing language is critical to successfully solving word problems because of the variation in word usage. The same verb can indicate addition in one word problem and subtraction in another. The key to applying the number-family analysis successfully to a range of problem types is the ability to analyze the language in the problem to determine the name for the total. For example, in a problem involving boys, girls, and children, the name for the total is children. If the problem gives a number for children, subtraction is required. If the total number of children is unknown, addition is required. The number-family strategy allows students to represent the analysis of the problem in a diagram and then use the diagram to determine the operation. The number-family analysis highlights the relationships between the concepts in the word problem and the values that are given.
