Explain the work of Masters and Johnson on sexual response.
What will be an ideal response?
Masters and Johnson were the first to use laboratory techniques in researching sexual response. This was possible because of technological development that provided them with technical instruments, such as miniature cameras. They used clinical tools in measuring genital response to sexual arousal and coitus itself. What they found is that males and females are very similar in genital response. Four phases of response were registered in both sexes: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. There are some sex differences, including ejaculatory contractions and a longer resolution phase in men and a greater variety of female orgasmic responses and the ability to have multiple orgasms in women.
