Which of the following statements is a plausible description of a Rankine cycle’s components?
A. The fluid exiting the turbine has the same specific entropy as the fluid entering
B. The boiler should be completely adiabatic.
C. The pump should be perfectly isothermal.
D. The condenser should be practically isobaric.
E. All of these statements are reasonable.
A. Incorrect. In a Carnot cycle this is true, but in a real cycle such as the Rankine cycle, the turbine will not be reversible and the fluid moving through the turbine will not be constant entropy. Look at Figure 5-5 to see this graphically.
B. Incorrect. A boiler is designed to add heat.
C. Incorrect. A pump will increase the temperature of the working fluid.
D. Correct. Ideally the fluid would undergo a completely isobaric phase change from vapor to liquid. While this won’t be literally true, it can be a very reasonable model.
E. Incorrect. Only one of these statements is at all reasonable. Review Section 5.2.1.
