Depression is a common co-existing condition with many other disabilities. Why do you think this is so? What implications does this fact have for teachers?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Disabilities create problems for the learner in carrying out expected tasks at a level equivalent to peers. These differences can lead to feelings of inferiority, worthlessness, hopelessness, and a reluctance to try new things. The learner may appear to lack social skills, to pull back from others, and to avoid taking risks. All of these are indicators of and related to a diagnosis of depression.
School failure in general puts a learner at risk of depression. Simply being served in special education can itself disrupt normal peer interactions, especially for learners who are not served in their neighborhood school or who are in more restrictive placements. Studies have indicated that learners with disabilities have a higher rate of depression than typical peers, and half of all completed suicides appear to be related to having a learning disability.
