Describe the converting process of copper.
What will be an ideal response?
The converting process is much like the Bessemer process used to produce steel. In the converter, the iron in the remaining material is oxidized, forming a layer of slag that is removed. The sulfur is oxidized, forming sulfur dioxide gas, and drawn off the converter. The remaining material, called blister copper, is about 99 percent pure. The blister copper is processed in a refining furnace, reducing its oxygen content and forming fire-refined copper. This fire-refined copper can be used to produce copper products by rolling, extruding, drawing, and casting.
