Critique the mission of Eden Project as it was (a) expressed originally and (b) later revised. How do these relate to the vision that is now driving Tim Smit?
What will be an ideal response?
The original mission statement emphasises environmental understanding, leading to positive action. It is
unclear if ‘all’ means tackling environmentally-unfriendly behaviours by the general public (not
dropping litter, harming animals or uprooting woodland plants etc.?) and business (not polluting, using
non-renewable resources extravagantly or behaving unethically etc). Thus it is broad, ambiguous,
seeming to allow Eden Project to engage in more-or-less any activity that it can present as
environmentally positive. As restated in the case, it has more in common with the wider thrust many
academics support, to inform and engage the general public in an understandings of science;
consequently, it seems more focused, legitimate and realistic. The vision still appears be multifaceted,
however, with Eden still involved in education and transformational outreach projects funded by the
visitor attraction, the latter both as an interesting tourist destination and as a venue for concerts and other
events. Perhaps Smit and colleagues have quietly abandoned the notion of influencing behaviour at large,
content to attract resources that they can redeploy to good effect as they judge appropriate.
