Compare and contrast focus group interviewing and face-to-face interviewing
What will be an ideal response?
Traditional interviews allow for more detailed content information, but are not able to observe interaction for greater detail on attitude, opinions, and experiences. Focus groups allow researchers to view group discussions of issues. Focus groups allow for spontaneous responses from participants that arise as meanings are socially constructed within the group, rather than individually created as with traditional interviews. In focus groups, interaction between group members replaces interaction between interviewer and subject in the traditional interview. Both types of interviews can have a set of structured questions, or remain unstructured to eliminate researcher perspective. Focus groups can be less expensive to conduct than individual interviews monetarily. Focus groups require much less time to complete than individual interviews that involve the same number of participants. However, focus group interviews produce less data than multiple individual interviews. An interviewer sacrifices data precision in exchange for interaction experience in focus groups. Groups produce less original ideas than individual interviews, and subjects tend to respond in a more extreme manner.
