Groups that impact reform
Chapter 12 begins with a discussion of three groups of people who exert considerable influence on the components and direction of reform efforts. Discuss each of these groups and identify the ways in which they influence reform. Describe their likely influences on teachers in your discipline. With which specific aspects of three "special interest groups" do you most disagree? (Or, if you do not disagree, substitute the aspects with which you most agree.) Explain your perspectives.
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Scoring guide:
Key elements that should appear in an appropriate response:
* The first part of the assignment requires the student to describe the specific ways in which the groups influence education and education reform. Full credit depends on the student's accuracy and complete response to each part of the answer.
* The second part of the assignment requires reading, discussion, critical thinking, and reflective thought. A carefully considered response addresses at least one positive and one negative possible outcome resulting from decisions based on the impact of each of the three groups of people. Points are deducted or added for broad-based responses.
* The last part of the assignment depends on reflective thinking and is a personal and professional judgment issue. Full credit depends on the inclusion of at least one aspect from each of the three groups of people and a carefully reasoned justification for the response. Points may be added or deducted depending on the logic and quality of the answer.
