Internal communications’ broad goal is to help create and sustain a healthy organizational culture. Its main responsibilities involve social media, employee engagement, counseling leadership, and facilitating change--especially in times of mergers and acquisitions--along with the accompanying communication challenges and opportunities. It’s a fast-growing field in PR due to several factors, including increasing competition for businesses, new avenues for communication, the economic uncertainty post 2008, a growing distrust of corporations, and the fact that the largest demographic, baby boomers, are leaving the workforce as Millennials enter it.
