From an Existential perspective, as per the chapter, what is the issue with the recovering SUD client calling themselves “an addict?”
What will be an ideal response?
In the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment area, too often clients will define themselves as “addicts.” From an existential perspective, they are so heavily invested in the external definition, in part because it absolves them of needing to create their own definition (and possibly avoid the pain of coming to terms with what the definition produces). The existential rebuttal can be that “you are not an addict; rather, you are a person in early recovery from a substance use disorder. But you are also many, many other meanings for many other people.” Existentialism argues that the “I-Am” experience is not the solution to a problem but instead is only the prerequisite condition to achieve an eventual solution.
