How important do you think mentors are to learning leadership skills? What type of leadership skills do you think are best learned from mentors, and what type do you think are best learned from formal education?

What will be an ideal response?

How important are mentors: People often learn leadership skills from their mentors. Employees who develop protégé-mentorship relationships and who receive career mentoring are more likely to be promoted, to have higher salaries, and to have higher job satisfaction and career satisfaction (Kammeyer-Mueller & Judge, 2008). Protégé-mentor relationships are important to the career success of both men and women (O’Brien, Biga, Kessler, & Allen, 2010). People with mentors tend to have better interpersonal relationships, are more motivated, and suffer slightly less work stress (Eby, Allen, Evans, Ng, & DuBois, 2008). Answer to mentors versus formal education: Although learning from mentors is important, formal education has a larger effect on objective career outcomes, so taking advantage of both gives you the best results (Kammeyer-Mueller & Judge, 2008). Answer for skills: The students will need to brainstorm to answer this question.
