Describe toxins and teratogens that can affect the fetus and how they affect the fetus

Teratogens
• Alcohol use—for the child there may be mental retardation, growth deficiency, facial abnormalities
• Cocaine—for the fetus there may be spontaneous abortions, stillbirth, premature births. The baby may experience low birth weight, poor growth, tremulousness, and high muscle tone. Babies may be difficult to comfort and challenging to engage in pleasant interactions.
• Smoking—low-birth weight, prematurity, and even death. The baby is more likely to be born with narrowed airways and curtailed lung function
Toxins
Environmental toxins-
• Lead, mercury, arsenic, cleaning products, and chemical solvents
• Pesticides
• Insect repellents such as DEET
All of these toxins may lead to miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and developmental delays.
