Compare and contrast cleaning a spray gun using a gun cleaning machine and cleaning it by hand.
What will be an ideal response?
In hand cleaning, the technician may disassemble and clean the gun, inspecting each part. Some technicians also soak their disassembled guns in cleaning solvents, which can be very harsh on the gun's packing and springs, although they do allow guns to be more easily cleaned.
Though gun washers vary slightly in how they work, there are basically two types. The first type operates in this manner: When the gun is partially broken down, the parts are placed in an enclosed vat, where solvent is sprayed over them like a dish-washer to clean them. The other is a part-washer type, in which the gun is cleaned with a brush that has solvents pumped through it, aiding in the cleaning of the gun. Some states have required that both these types of gun cleaning machines be covered when in use to reduce the amount of VOCs released into the atmosphere.
Hand washing and machine washing of spray guns are similar in that both methods employ solvents that release VOCs into the environment. Technicians should use personal protection equipment when cleaning spray guns.
