Explain the term "chain migration," and discuss the effects it had on immigrants, and on the

structure of American cities.

What will be an ideal response?

Chain migration is the process that emerges when one member of the family (generally a
young male) immigrates, establishes himself, earns the required economic stability. He then
sends for near relatives. In turn, these newer immigrants add to the economic worth of the
family, and they send for more and more relatives and friends. In this way large groups of
people from one area in the old culture are re-settled in the new culture. As they establish
social relations with others of same ethnic background, a "ghetto" like situation arises. This
happens easily in cities, but is also noted in the ethnic patterns across the U. S., even in
small towns and farmlands.
