Describe one important determinant of whether children respond positively or negatively after their parents' divorce? How long does it take for things to "get back to normal?" Are there sex differences? Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Level of conflict between the mother and father has a significant impact on the psychological adjustment of their children. Couples with lower conflict (or at least the ability to control it and/or keep the children out of it) have children who adjust better. After about a year, children usually seem to get back to their previous level of functioning, however, boys have more difficulty adjusting than girls. This may be because they often live with their mothers, so they lose the same-sex role model and they may challenge her authority.
