How were the lunar maria formed?
What will be an ideal response?
The maria are ancient lava flows that have apparently covered older, cratered lowlands.
Although most of the Moon cooled rapidly after its formation, radioactive decay heated material deep in the crust, and part of it melted. Molten rock followed the cracks up to the surface and flooded the giant basins with successive lava flows of dark basalts from about 4 billion to about 2 billion years ago. This formed the maria.
