Describe the different types of response sets you can observe when using multi-item scales.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: A response set is the tendency for someone completing a questionnaire to respond to a series of items in a specific direction, regardless of differences in item content. An acquiescence response set occurs when participants tend to respond positively (saying yes to items) rather than saying now or disagreeing. Another response set is the social desirability response set. This occurs when participants answer in way that is socially desirable rather than expressing their own beliefs. In both cases, the items are not really assessing the participants’ views or opinions, but instead they are answering based on other factors.
