Describe an electric arc furnace and how it works.

What will be an ideal response?

The electric arc furnace has a circular steel shell similar to a large cooking pot. Several cylindrical electrodes project into the furnace from the top. A high-voltage electric current is introduced through the electrodes, causing an arc to pass between them and producing the heat needed to melt the charge. The furnace tilts and the steel pours off under the slag.
