Identify and describe two factors that affect the social adjustment of individuals with hearing impairment

People who are deaf may have difficulty finding others with whom they can communicate, placing them at risk for loneliness. In inclusionary settings, little interaction typically occurs between students who are deaf and those who are not, so they need to be taught social behaviors to help them interact with hearing peers. A child who is deaf who has hearing parents may face greater social adjustment challenges than if she or he has parents who are deaf. Hearing parents may not become proficient in ASL, limiting their ability to communicate easily. The need for social interaction is probably most influential in leading many people with hearing loss to associate primarily with others with hearing loss.
