What challenges do Millennials pose for the police workforce of the future?
What will be an ideal response?
While Millennials are technologically savvy, enthusiastic, and service-oriented, they also tend to carry high expectations and may be more eager for quick advancement and higher starting salaries. In addition, while police officers have traditionally stayed in the career field and agency for their entire careers, Millennials may be more likely to switch jobs and employers after just a few years.
To compete with the private sector, police agencies may need to offer Millennials more opportunities for specialization and training – and may need to rethink annual performance evaluations, moving to more individual, informal, and frequent feedback from supervisors.
