Define risk and protective factors and describe how these two factors interact to support children of disaster following exposure to traumatic events.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Over 14% of the population is exposed to disaster in childhood. Because of this, they experience many traumatic symptoms following exposure. They may vary from increased arousal, regressive behavior, or functional impairment even years after exposure. As a result, people learn to survey and use positive adaptations despite adverse experiences. The risk factors, factors that challenge positive adaptation and increase likelihood of the onset of a problem, serve as a constant reminder of these challenges before and after the disaster. However, the view of their protective factors, those that compensate vulnerability and increase resistance to risk by moderating relationships, offers hope to this group.
