What are the basic principles of good assessment when determining offender needs?
What will be an ideal response?
To detect critical needs that would be problematic in any setting, for example,
acute illness, to identify deficits or needs that may have influenced or been part of a
pattern of law violation (criminality) or which may interfere with successful reintegration
(i.e., drug abuse, impulse control, and vocational deficits), to determine offenders’
deficits, needs, traits, or behaviors which influence their adjustment or management
while in prison, for example, vulnerability, personal/social skills, and to serve broader
human needs, for example, for structure, activity, support, privacy, and so on. Typically,
these diverse needs are addressed by different agencies throughout the community.
