What is the difference between active and passive sexual harassment? Can you think of some examples?
What will be an ideal response?
Active sexual harassment is directed toward a specific person. It can be verbal or graphic (sending
pictures or video material). For example, an aggressor can send explicitly sexual messages to an
unknown person in a chat room or in a private message on social networking sites. This kind of sexual
aggression can be aimed at disturbing someone, but it can also be a kind of unwanted sexual attention,
where (usually) a man tries to persuade a woman to have sex with him. Passive sexual harassment is
indirect; it is not aimed at anyone in particular and instead includes posting a comment or material that
is offensive online, where many people can see it. Therefore, it can make more people feel bad or
harassed. For example, one can post on social networking sites or forums sexually explicit materials,
perhaps offensive to a certain group or gender.
