The posttensioning of elevated concrete floors reduces the slab and beam dimensions. This reduces the cost of concrete and reinforcing bars but is compensated for by the added cost of posttensioning steel and the use of more skilled (posttensioning) labor. So, why is posttensioning of concrete structures so popular.
What will be an ideal response?
A major advantage of reduced structural dimensions is that it reduces the floor-to-floor height of the building and hence the façade area. Because the building façade is a major cost item, posttensioning reduces building cost substantially. For example, a 6 in. reduction in floor-to-floor height gives a reduction of 25 ft in the overall height of a 50 -story building. This is equivalent of cutting two floors of façade.
