What is Rape Trauma Syndrome? List and describe the two distinct phases of victim response to sexual assault.

What will be an ideal response?

In 1974, Ann W. Burgess and Lynda L. Holmstrom conducted a study on 146 patients admitted to an emergency ward of a city hospital. Of the 142 patients, 92 had been victims of rape. From their analysis of the rape victims, they found that many share a consistent series of reactions following the event. The phrase they used to describe these series of reactions was Rape Trauma Syndrome. (1) Acute phase: Victims may feel shock, fear, anger, and anxiety, which may visually be noticeable from the victim’s reactions or masked by a composed or subdued behavior. The victim may also feel humiliation, embarrassment, and self-blame. Physical reactions to the victimization can include physical trauma, pain, general soreness, and tension, gastrointestinal irritability, and genitalia disturbances. (2) Long-term reorganization phase typically begins 2 to 6 weeks after the attack and is a period in which the victim attempts to regain a sense of control over his or her lives. This period is characterized by motor activity, such as changing residences, changing telephone numbers, or visiting family members.
