Why is the medicalization of men’s sexual difficulties bad for men?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. The process of transforming “impotence” to “erectile dysfunction” was accompanied by diagnostic expansion and disease mongering. Viagra was specifically and intentionally marketed to men in such a way as to convince them that a large proportion of men had this medical condition and that it was possible they did as well. Yet much of what Pfizer defines as “mild erectile dysfunction” is really normal sexual function (occasionally being unable to keep or maintain an erection is a standard result of aging or stress). Not only did the medicalization of impotence reshape ideas about what “normal” sexual performance is (always being able to get an erection when one is wanted and maintain it as long as desired) in a way that is unrealistic without medical intervention. Medicalization also deemphasizes the importance of lifestyle and relationship issues that play an important role in sexual functioning. This in turn encourages an idea of masculinity that is unemotional, physically perfect, and free from having to show vulnerability to others.
