Compare mescaline and psilocybin. Describe their historic use and how they are used in modern society.
What will be an ideal response?
Mescaline is a hallucinogen derived from the top of the peyote cactus, while psilocybin comes from a variety of "sacred" Mexican mushrooms. Before the Spanish invasion, the Aztecs used these drugs in ceremonial rites. They are still used in ceremonial rites among the native peoples of Mexico, the American Southwest, and Central and South America. The effects of the drugs result in users feeling as if they are being transported into another reality. Many use them as a method to "expand their consciousness," create ideas, and/or alter experiences. GRADING RUBRIC: 10 points total, 5 for the comparison, 2.5 for historic use, 2.5 for modern-day use.
