The British (and French) wanted to keep their empire, the United States was anti-colonial. Britain wanted to police a balance of power in Europe, the United States opposed spheres of influence and balance of power diplomacy, and the Soviet Union wanted to dominate Eastern Europe. The Soviets wanted to expand their influence and ideology, both Britain and the United States were anticommunist. The Soviets wanted to guard their security by dismembering Germany and imposing harsh reparations, the British and United States saw a controlled Germany as an important bulwark against Soviet expansion.
